The natural brain state of hypnosis is the same alpha brain wave state that you're in when daydreaming or meditating or that spaced out feeling when in a monotonous meeting. This alpha/theta brain wave is slower than you're alert conscious state. While in this focused, relaxed state you can create powerful changes in your subconscious with words and imagery.
